Hi all, In my forum intro, I mentioned that I am scratch building an `orion` 55" span, 2ch glider (from a west wings plan). The wing is designed with a certain amount of washout at the wing tips, but doesn`t actually state on the plan how much your supposed to end up with. So, my question is how much is desirable and how much is too much? What are the effects of having too much or too little?
I`ve no doubt it will fly ok and i`m thinking that the washout will help with turning and/or tip stalling---am I right?? Your thoughts? Thanks folks.

Hello Kev - To be honest i have never built a Orion but i have built a Gentle Lady and i put the washout in when covering, but if i remember correct if you put too much in it will not fly as i did with another Gentle Lady and it cashed by trying to stall all the time.
In my opinion you don't have to have washout but it helps.

Thanks admin. I think just a little may help then. I will do as you did and wait till I cover it so I can `adjust` it by shrinking the film in strategic places.....famous last words cheers.

As a rough rule of thumb, if washout is required, around 1mm (on each tip) for each 10inches of span should do it. So on a 55" span model, 5-6mm would be sensible.
Personally I would build the washout in, and check it after covering, otherwise, through the everyday variations in temperature and humidity, the wing will tend towards straightening itself.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that Jef. Good point about humidity and temperature. I think I will build it in rather than let the covering do all the work. Obvious when you think about it !! ( I did say I had been away from modelling for quite a while ) The wing span is actually 59.5" not 55 as I quoted (I was thinking of a previous build idea)., but I`ll go for around 6mm max washout. Many thanks

Morning all, I`m off into the workshop today to get this wing built. All the ribs are sanded, jigs made for the `built in` washout, plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits, radio on-----bliss see you later

Hi everyone, Well, after a good few hours in the workshop, the wing is built and i`ve ended up with 4mm of washout at the tips. Slightly less than prescribed but i`m ok with that. From what I gather it`s better to have too little than too much. At least it`s the same amount at both ends ! I`ll try and post some pics once admin have kindly re-sized them for me ( a hint there admin to check your email ) Cheers all.

A few more pics of the tail feathers and fuz. The cut out on the balsa canopy by the way is for the voltspy battery monitor and the black `lines down the side of the fuz are carbon fibre tows to strengthen it as these models have a habit of breaking the fuz towards the rear. Looks a mess at the moment, but once sanded and covered it will be fine. Note also the enlarged rudder (about 20%) to give better control and the (perhaps excessive) lightning holes. Cheers everyone.
