Hello everyone, I was thinking about the first few f/f gliders I built back in the 60`s and wandered what your first build was. I started with the Pioneer, followed by Nomad, then Dolphin, Caprice and finally, the wonderful Chief. I think they were all Keilkraft models, but I may be wrong....It`s long time ago. Can`t quite remember after that, but I think I got into control line.......but that`s another story! Cheers all. ps: Just found this interesting link. Worth a look www.vintagemodelcompany.com/keil-kraft.html

Hello Jef, Hope you are well. I remember the Conquest very well. I didn`t have one but a mate of mine had one and when he built it, the fuz ended up like a banana. The funny thing was, he tried to straighten it by holding it in front of the coal fire........and......yes, you`ve guest it, next thing, whoooof up in flames. We laughed about that for years.
Cheers for now.

Hi Kev and All.
My Dad built KK Invader, and taught me how to tow (40 years ago).
On my first attempt I got the model good and high. It flew away and we never saw it again.
We searched for hours. Dad, bless him, never blamed me for it.
About 15 years ago, I cleared my conscience, by building another KK Invader, and giving it to him on his birthday.
It was very easy build, and because I had deadline, I didn't have any problem finishing it off. Normally my projects clutter the building board for years!
Have any of you ever revisited model in similar way, or given completed model as present?
Jef

When I write the word "" in this thread, it is deleted during the upload, and even if I edit the post, all of the word ""s are gone... WHY? ? The word is even deleted when I put parenthesis on it. The word is a single letter, the first letter of the alphabet. Is this some kind of joke??

Good evening jef, I`ve just contacted admin about the very same problem, so hopefully they can sort it.
I`m glad its not just me....I thought I was going nuts!
Cheers

The KK Invader seems to be a popular first model. Back in the late '50's, my dad built me one. I would have been about 8. Neither of us knew anything about what we were doing ! ( some things never change). Remember it as dad got some silver paint to finish it and as a kid it looked to me as it was made from aluminium!
We took it to our local park, the Racecourse in Northampton. After a few test hand launches, we put it on a towline and by more luck than judgement got a real great launch out of it. Just as it came off the line , there was an audible crack as the tail plane broke and the beast plummeted down . We went home with rather a lot of bits that refused to be reassembled into an Invader again, unfortunately!

Hi Kev,
You are right there. After about 40 years away from aeromodelling, being seduced by radio controlled model boats for much of that time, the bug has started again.
I have started buying Aeromodeller and "found" the 36" Hi start class that Peterborough MAC and SAM are promoting. I think that as a 60+year old modeller, this is just about my mark . The models are fairly simple and easy to build and transport and I might get away with flying them in my local park.
Might even return to the scene of my previous triumph as I live about a 10 minute drive from the Racecourse . I still think that a carrier bag for taking the bits home could be useful. While a bit big for the 36" class, perhaps even another Invader beckons.
As an aside, is there much general interest in the 36" Hi Start class?

Hi tiggy, I must admit, as I only fly r/c gliders from the slope now, I don`t no much about the 36" hi start class you mention, but i`m sure there are some folk on here who will. The `old` models do seem to be popular when you get chatting to people and the fact that they are still available (albeit re-kitted) surely shows a demand. Hope you get more info soon and post some pics when you get building......especially of the Invader ......you know you want one. Cheers Kev

KK Caprice was my first kit I think. I used to tow it up on the end of 100ft of fishing line running like hell down the local park, then follow it as it caught the smaller thermals. I remember taking it to school once, the Art Teacher was into free flight and had everyone making models for a week. We then test glided them off the terraced playing fields to see who's went the furthest. I remember the Caprice landing in Kirkstall power station (Leeds) about 1/4 mile away after catching a small Thermal. I got it back. I used to make my own designs as well with some interesting results. Great days and Summers always seemed hot and settled.

Here is a pic of the old box from the model that Dad built, the new box that I bought in the 90's and the (currently requiring repair) model that I built from the contents of the bright box and subsequently gave Dad. It is mine again, as Dad is doing plenty of flying of his own now. Attachments:
