He we go guys/girls...This is my flyfly ASW28,a £80 kit.Following my experiance with the jantar I decided from the start I would build it with flaps. This was an early kit with no flaps ,I believe they now come with flaps but have top hinge flaps with limited downward movement,I wanted about 75+deg down on these otherwise it would never land slowly as i estimated it would be over 4lb in weight. What I did was create bottom hinged ,top driven flaps like a mouldie with hidden internal servos for the flaps. This would keep it aerodynamic and fast flying but should then slow down and land on a crisp packet when required with full crow breaking. I am using a hacker 30-8xl...1120kv roughly on 4s 2600 lipo.I havent finalised the prop yet but it will be in the region of 9x5 to 10x6...pulling about 45amps so should have over 600 watts. Got hitec 5065 in ailerons, turnigy 555 digi on flaps.Futaba 3101 on closed loop rudder and a innolab 202mg in the fin for the elevator.A jeti spin 66 is the esc. I spent ages on the pilot and canopy and beefed up the incidence pin setup with brass tubes between the pins, across the fuz and a mpx green plug setup for the 4servo wing. It flys like a hotliner if required and lands beautifully.

Hello 9zapman, What do you think of the quality of the flyfly models as i`ve heard good and not so good stories. Also, do they do a glider only version of the ASW28 or just the electric?
Thanks.

The fuz are weak mainly. And I would only buy one after seeing the wings.Sometimes they can be warped.I bought my asw from show in uk few years ago.Yes they do the asw in glider only if you want to.My asw was for flat field use, hence the motor.I decided the fuz was strong enough for flat grass but if at the slope it would need further glass cloth reinforcement. For their cost they are fine if you get non warped wing.Part of the reason for flap conversion was to reduce the landing speed and thus reduce likelyhood of damage. It will float in with 70deg flap,30deg aileron up(full crow),2mm of down elevator and head wind of say 10mph.Without the crow it would come in at about 25mph! They are strong enough for loops, rolls, cuban 8's and fly inverted well.I have ail to flap mix to make the flaps move with the ailerons to improve roll, ele to flap mix to give camber both ways as i pull elevator on.I.E..up elevator gives full trailing edge down of about 10mm of flap and 8mm on ailerons.Full down elevator gives 10mm up flap and about 8mm up ailerons. This allows good response in the pitch department allied to cg of about 65mm from the leading edge. With this rearward cg the elevator movement can be kept quite small at around 7mm each way. Thermal flap of about 2mm all along the trailing edge of the wing slows it down for some surprising thermal ability for its weight. Its wing loading is above 22oz/sqft..quite a brick really. Here are some more pics..chris.

Hi Chris, Man thanks for the heads up. I have read many stories of warped wings--seems to be a common problem. Shame really, but like you say that for the money you get what you get, so to speak. You just need to do some extra work on it I guess. Things like extra cloth on the fuz and adding flaps etc isn`t a problem, but would definitely want to see the kit before buying due to wing problems.
Anyway, thanks again Kev.

xtra work is an understatement! to properly sort them out you need to spend tens of hours.I spent about 60 hrs from scratch to finish with the asw28.Its like the old saying "you dont get owt for nowt"...you buy cheap and spend many hours getting them right ,or pay more and spend less time etc...I have spent half this time(30hrs) on mouldie to completion....you pays your money..etc...Chris.
PS ....If you spend cheaply and put no effort in you are in for hard and wastfull time with these models.Even worse with the Cmpro discus etc...these are worse than the flyfly kits.I have only ever seen one discus(cmpro) fly sucessfully and the owner nearly completly rebuilt it first!

Point taken Chris....cheap models can end up becoming expensive in the long run (and disappointing).
You get what you pay for.....
Cheers.

I know this is an old thread... but I have only just gotten round to reading it. The FlyFly Fox is similar to the ASW 28 in that it needs sorting, but that is the fun of aeromodelling, surely? I paid about £150 for one. The fuselage moulding (despite being slightly twisted) should cost at least 2/3 of what the kit cost, and if you hate covering - like I do - then the other third is money very well spent! Straightening a twisted glass fus is easy! (Costs a kettle of boiling water and <2 minutes work.)
Yes there are things that could be done better, but when any flying model kit costs less than £200 "ARTF", and looks this good, then what do you expect???
My son has a Fox and after the initial flights, wing repair and undercarriage rebuild, it is now a great little model. Looks fab, flies well, lands well, hell I might even be interested in getting one for me (don't tell Jane though!). Or I will swap my completely sorted 3.4m Minimoa for one, if you fancy a swap.
I have found a source for Action Man dolls, at about a fiver each and they look great in models of this scale, although I pushed the boat out and fitted "The Wanted" pop group dolls in my son's one, at a tenner each. Well cool, apparently!
Cheers,
Jef

i have the fly fly asw28 as well, my wings were ok, i intend to cut flaps on it, it does land a bit quick and would make it much better landing on the slope- video sloping my asw28 and at the field
cheers
