Hello Everyone. Thought i would do review on all built up glider kit called the Elan by Cambrian Model Company. The Elan is 100" thermal soarer which is in kit form and you built it yourself. It is very nice kit to build, i have built 2 now and enjoyed both times. Comes with good detailed plan and booklet, is easy to build with mid wing fixing to the fuselage by 2 steel joiners. They did stop making these kits along with their other kits, but now there just recently started to product them again. I use to fly mine off the bungee which flew very nice and sedate. Also tried launching by the winch but only kiting it up gently with no ping at the top. I did use carbon tows along the spars just to help it bit. All in all good starter kit which would suit beginner builder or nice project for the experienced for relaxing fly. If anyone is interested please check there website www.cambrianplanes.co.ukHere are few pictures Attachments:

Evening Jg, I know the model quite well as I had a long, hard look at them at the Cosford show last year. I just couldn`t quite stretch to it financially. The quality looks good and from what i`ve heard, (and as you know) they fly really well. I certainly would like one, but alas, still not quite there money wise having bought other gear to get myself set up for my recent come back. However......I always put a £1 on the health lottery......you never know Looking forward to the build log Regards.

It`s a thought JG. I notice on their website when you go to the checkout page there is a box to enter a discount code. No idea what or how you get a code but it shows that they are up for some negotiations. ps; they have 8 in stock according to the website

Good evening JG, I have been looking (or should I say drooling!) again at the `Elan` and just wandered what your thought are on adding spoilers? 1. Does it need them?......... to aid landings? 2. If it would be beneficial, would you recommend the servo less ones? Many thanks Kev ps; I`m saving my pennies

......and your thoughts on spoilers JG?..........Re: my previous post Morning Kevin, sorry i forgot that part, i never did fit spoilers to mine as you can see in the picture, and to be honest i don't think i would if i built another one, i did not need them as it flew nice, and really i think spoilers are only use for spoiling the lift, and to stop floating on landing but good pilots don't need them so it's up to you if you do fit them again you could fit them but you don't have to use them

Wish I had fields big enough to land without brakes! Seriously though, if you invest your time in building a thermal soarer, the additional effort of fitting brakes is a great insurance policy. Having had a glider break up in the air (trying to defeat a strong thermal) I would never build a 2m-3m thermal soarer without any brakes. Then again, if you build it strong enough, I guess there's no need. Cheers, Jef

Have to agree with recent comments, re; spoilers.......If you`ve got them, you can use um...if you haven`t...you can`t.

There is someone who flys in our local competition, it's his own design 100" glider, all build up, with carbon spars and joiners with no airbrakes and he always seems to land in the field in the landing circle everytime more less .... humm Depands on how you feel, each to there own
